ENGLAND’S Katy Mclean has received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list for services to rugby.
The 28 year-old fly half from South Shields has won 64 caps while combining her playing career with teaching in the North East.
She is the second current England Women’s player to be honoured after flanker Maggie Alphonsi, who received an MBE in 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
The honour arrived in an unusual fashion, though. The letter asking whether Mclean wished to accept the award was sent to the former ground of her club side Darlington Mowden Park Sharks.
Marked ‘On Her Majesty’s Service’, it triggered concerns it might be a court order until it was successfully redirected.
