Remembering 'Slem'

On behalf of the past and present members of the RPA, we would like to express our great sadness at the news of England winger Mike Slemen’s death.

As is well documented, Mike had a fantastic playing career and was recognised as an exceptional talent in the England Grand Slam team of 1980, as well as the Lions the same year. However Mike also had a significant impact on generations of rugby players as a schoolteacher at Merchant Taylor’s Crosby, as well as being an outstanding coach for Liverpool (St Helens), Orrell, the North, England A and England.

RPA CEO Damian Hopley commented: “Mike was a great coach to work with, he had an exceptional rugby brain, a strong eye for detail and a dry sense of humour that made him very popular with all the players he worked with over his distinguished coaching career. On behalf of all of us fortunate enough to have been coached and become better players and people under Mike’s tutelage, our sincere condolences go to the Slemen family. RIP Slem.”
