Senior Academy players from Premiership Rugby clubs met for an introduction to the elite game on Wednesday 21st August at The Rugby School, for the annual RPA Academy Induction Day.

This year’s edition, which was supported by the RFU and Premiership Rugby, saw over 70 players from the Premiership Rugby clubs gather together at the historic school, to learn what it entails to become an elite rugby player.

The day consisted of a Q&A featuring England U20 Head Coach Mark Mapletoft, former Worcester & Northampton Saints prop Ethan Waller, Northampton Saint stars Tommy Freeman and Fin Smith and former England captain Dylan Hartley where they gave the players a taste of what it’s like to be an elite rugby player.

There were also several workshops throughout the day to help guide the players on their journey from academy to an elite player, such as building healthy relationships, and social media education, both delivered by B5 Consultancy; understanding and protecting your wellbeing, and understanding personal responsibility in being a rugby player. 

They also received a session on preparing to perform under pressure, delivered by Gazing Red2Blue.  Gazing aim to help people and organisations everywhere to perform under pressure.  Their Gazing Red2Blue brand specifically focuses on mindset development, where they have previously worked with New Zealand Rugby and Leinster Rugby.

The players also received an introduction to the RPA’s Gain Line programme.  The programme aims to support and guide members with their personal and professional development, helping them to fulfil their potential and prepare them for the transition to life after rugby.

Research indicates that transitioning into elite rugby can be challenging for young athletes, and that is why this type of day is crucial. Throughout the day, they gained valuable insights into the realities of life as an elite rugby player, including the career paths, opportunities, and potential pitfalls they may face. England U20 Head Coach Mark Mapletoft added: "It was an honour to be invited along to this year's Academy Induction Day at Rugby School. Having face time with the players was a privilege and I was encouraged by the eagerness on show. It's imperative that a combined approach continues to be employed from all parties to look after the welfare of this new generation of players.

"Being transparent with these young men about the demands as well as the opportunities ahead of them is incredibly important, and I look forward to hopefully working with them in the near future."
