Tom Powell has travelled the world playing Sevens for England, but the next time he boards an aircraft to New Zealand, it won’t be for rugby. The 28-year-old will start a fresh new life in the Southern Hemisphere, after taking up a role with Kiwi based insurance company, CBL.
Since making his debut for England Sevens in 2010, Tom has always had one eye on the rugby pitch and another on his future.
The veteran of 40 HSBC Sevens World Series tournaments, has been harvesting his future for some time, ready for whatever may fall after rugby.
“I have always been quite aware that rugby is only a short stint in a much longer journey and while you should enjoy it while it lasts, you need to be ready for a second gig when it comes to an end. With that in mind I have been studying for a degree in Leadership and Management which I will finish before I leave in September. I have also been studying for a Foundation and Insurance exam at the Chartered Insurance Institute, which I will also complete before I head away.
