The Rugby Players’ Association (The RPA) today announced the nominees for the Computacenter Players’ Player of the Year Award 2014, as voted for by Aviva Premiership players based on performances in domestic rugby this season.
This prestigious and unique award recognises the outstanding talent in English rugby union and will be announced at the RPA Computacenter Players’ Awards 2014, to be held at Battersea Evolution on Wednesday 21st May.
The six nominees include Harlequins’ Mike Brown and Danny Care, Bath Rugby’s George Ford, Leicester Tigers’ Vereniki Goneva, Northampton Saints’ Samu Manoa and Worcester Warriors’ Chris Pennell.
For Brown, this year’s nomination caps off an exceptional season for the Harlequins and England fullback, with 15 Aviva Premiership games and 6 tries to his name. He is also nominated for the England Player of the Year Award 2014 in Association with Rhead Group, after scoring 4 tries in 15 test matches this season.
Danny Care earns his nomination after playing a key role in Harlequins’ season to date, with the scrum-half also proving to be a vital part of the England setup, with 5 caps in this year’s RBS 6 Nations.
For George Ford, the Computacenter Players’ Player of the Year nomination accompanies his LV= Young Player of the Year nomination, with both awards recognising his outstanding season.
As for Fijian born Vereniki Goneva, a season best 12 tries in 18 Aviva Premiership matches, has helped propel the Tigers up the table and into a play-off spot. The 29 test capped player has already been named Leicester Tigers’ Player of the Year, Leicester’s Supporters Player of the Year and Aviva Premiership Rugby Player of the Month for February.
Joining the above nominees is Californian born Saints lock Samu Manoa, who finds himself nominated after a dominant season, crossing for 6 tries and helping Saints to their second consecutive Aviva Premiership Final.
The final challenger for the award, Chris Pennell, has been in great form for Worcester in a challenging season playing in all 22 matches, with 5 tries and 84 points.
