The Rugby Players’ Association (the RPA) today announced that LV= will once again be the official sponsor of the LV= Young Player of the Year Award 2014, which will be presented at the RPA Computacenter Players’ Awards 2014, held at Battersea Evolution on Wednesday 21st May.
There are six nominees for the LV= Young Player of the Year Award 2014 as voted for by Aviva Premiership players based on performances in domestic rugby this season. To qualify for the LV= Young Player of the Year Award players must have been 23 or under as of 1st September 2013.
This season’s nominees include Saracens back-rower Billy Vunipola who has been impressive since his debut against London Wasps in September last year. Vunipola’s strong showing in the Aviva Premiership saw England selecting the forward his first international cap against Australia in November.
The second player nominated is exciting Exeter Chiefs’ fullback Jack Nowell who despite only playing six times this season due to a knee injury, has been a vital force in the Chiefs’ attack. The 21-year-old, remains among the best young backs in the country, and made his test debut against France earlier this year.
Bath Rugby fly-half George Ford is the third nominee for the LV= Young Player of the Year Award 2014 after joining the club in the summer of the 2013/14 season. The 21-year-old has been in dynamic form this season, and was rewarded with his first England cap against Italy in the 6 Nations.
Joining the above three is London Wasps forward Joe Launchbury who is also nominated for the England Player of the Year Award 2014. Launchbury has had another stellar season for both club and country, establishing himself as one of the brightest talents in world rugby.
The penultimate nominee is Leicester Tigers’ fly-half Owen Williams, who after joining the club from Scarlets last summer has been a standout in the Tigers season to date. The 22-year-old was named Leicester’s Young Player of Year in April and Leicester’s Supporter’s Young Player of the Year.
The final nominee for the LV= Young Player of the Year 2014 is Bath Rugby’s utility back Anthony Watson who after moving to the South-West from London Irish in the summer of 2013 has been a consistently impressive performer, scoring four tries this season.
