We sit down with RPA Player Representative for Sale Sharks, Josh Beaumont.

Your experience so far as an RPA Player Representative?

It’s been extremely positive, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Players’ Board so far. It’s been well documented how big the last couple of years have been for the RPA and the professional game with a range of different issues including the season structure and the new game laws, so for me personally it’s been very interesting. Being able to represent the views of my teammates has been a great responsibility and something I look forward to continuing this season.

Biggest learnings from the role?

It’s been a terrific insight into how the professional game operates off the pitch. We’ve worked hard to try and implement change and get our voices heard in the right places. The RPA is the driving force behind every player welfare issue, and to understand how they deal with each different stakeholder, has been a great eye opener.

Elected again for 2018/19, what are you goals for the season ahead?

It’s very exciting to be elected again in the role by my teammates. Last season was all about finding my feet in the position, understanding how a board meeting operates, and gaining a deep insight into how the professional game is run. My main goal is to keep making sure the voice of my Sale Sharks teammates is heard loud and clear. Obviously, opinions and discussions may be different between clubs, but I look forward to working together with the other Player Reps to make sure we are all driving towards the same destination.

Earliest rugby memory?

As a kid I would head down to my local rugby club, Fylde, and watch my two older brothers play. I loved watching them and they inspired me to take my own rugby seriously.

Childhood hero?

I used to play in the backs, so Jonny Wilkinson was a massive hero of mine. He was awesome to follow growing up and was someone I wanted to shape my game on. That was until my career took a slightly different turn and I ended up in the forward pack. I have not looked back since.

Main inspiration?

My whole family have been an enormous inspiration for me, in particular my Dad who has always been someone I can turn to for advice and guidance. Brian Ashton has also been great support throughout my career. He coached me at Fylde and was a big source of energy and advice, helping me make a smooth transition from amateur to professional rugby.

Any other sports?

I love all sports. I used to play a lot of cricket in the summer and really enjoyed it. These days I am a keen golfer, so I try and get out on the course whenever I can.

Away from rugby?

I am currently doing my MBA for CEO’s in Sport, which is completed through the VSI Executive Education at Salford University. It’s been great so far and keeps me busy and interested away from rugby. I am also a massive Blackburn Rovers fan, so I enjoy heading up to Ewood Park to watch them play.

Favourite holiday destination?

That would have to be Costa Brava in Spain. It’s a beautiful place, and somewhere I go to chill and relax after a long season.
